Program Description
Overview
The Job Corps Electrical Overhead Line Construction Advanced Training program provides training in the following subject areas:
- Safety in electrical transmission and distribution maintenance
- Care and testing of rubber gloves and sleeves
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) overhead line safety compliance
- Defensive driver training
- Introduction to the Smart Grid and transmission and distribution systems
- Work-area protection
- Basic electricity math and vocabulary
- Safety checks and pre-climb procedures
- Safety checks and climbing—wood poles
- Knot-tying and rigging
- Line-related materials, tools, and cutters
- Hand line
- Installation arms—wood, fiberglass
- Guying in poles, down, head, and span • Primary wire and telecommunications cable
- Transformer installation
- Assembling a three-phase appurtenance arm (cut-out arm)
- Installing service lateral
- Working with heavy equipment (bucket truck and digger/derrick truck)
- Commercial driver’s license
Program Expectations
Students entering the Electrical Overhead Line Construction Advanced Training program will be expected to participate in the following professional practices:
- Arrive on time and be ready to begin work immediately.
- Dress for the training area with uniform and boots worn properly at all times.
- Work the entire time while on the job.
- Follow safety guidelines.
- Follow rules and instructions of the training area and Job Corps.
- Demonstrate respect for self, tools, and equipment.
- Take care of the work area—keeping work areas clean and safe, picking up tools, and maintaining the shop.
- Exercise good customer relations skills.
Program Entry Requirements
Before entering the Electrical Overhead Line Construction Advanced Training program, students must:
- Complete either Job Corps’ basic Electrical or Facilities Maintenance career technical training program.
- Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
- Earn heights (acrophobia) clearance (32-plus feet).
- Have a positive behavior record with no major incidents in the past 90 days.
- Have a positive attendance and progress record.
- Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.
- Meet academic (math and reading) requirements.
- Have a valid driver’s license.
- Pass an entrance exam.
- Complete a successful phone, in-person, or video-conference interview.
Primary Credential
As a Job Corps student, you can earn credentials in your training area that demonstrate you have gained the knowledge and skills to help you succeed in your career. Credentials may lead to greater employment opportunities, higher wages, and promotions. Students who complete a center- based Construction training area can earn nationally recognized credentials from organizations such as
Students training in union-affiliated programs,
- The United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC),
- International Masonry Institute (IMI),
- International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE),
