The Job Corps Solar PV and Thermal System Installer Advanced Training program requires training in the following subject areas:

• Safety

• Installing solar thermal collectors, water heaters, storage tanks, piping, pipe insulation, and connecting-system piping

Program Expectations

Students entering the Solar PV and Thermal System Installer Advanced Training program will be expected to participate in the following professional practices:

• Arrive on time and be ready to begin work immediately.
• Dress for the training area with uniform and boots worn properly at all times.
• Work the entire time while on the job.
• Adhere to OSHA and other safety rules at all times.
• Follow rules and instructions of the training area and Job Corps.
• Demonstrate respect for self, tools, and equipment.
• Take care of the work area—keeping work areas clean and safe, picking up tools, and maintaining the shop.
• Exercise good customer relations skills.

Program Entry Requirements

Before entering the Solar PV and Thermal System Installer Advanced Training program, students must:

• Complete one of the following Job Corps basic career technical training programs: Carpentry; Electrical; Facilities Maintenance; Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC); or Plumbing.
• Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
• Have the ability to perform physical requirements of solar PV installations, including
• regularly lifting 50 pounds and safely climbing ladders up to 40 feet.
• Have Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour Training certificate.
• Have a positive behavior record with no major incidents in the past 90 days.
• Have a positive attendance and progress record.
• Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.
• Meet academic (math and reading) requirements.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Pass an entrance exam.
• Complete a successful phone or in-person interview.

• Attics, basements, and crawl spaces

• Building safety systems
• Introduction to heating and cooling systems

• Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.
• Meet academic (math and reading) requirements.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Pass an entrance exam.
• Complete a successful phone, in-person, or video-conference interview.
