Overview
The Job Corps Plumbing (Roto-Rooter) Advanced Training program provides training in the following subject areas:
- Job safety
- Sanitary systems and drain-cleaning
- Roto-Rooter drain-cleaning machines
- Cables, heads, connectors, and fixtures
- Sewer and drain diagnoses
- Customer care
- Plumbing math, basic electricity, and tools
- Piping materials and fittings (copper,cast iron, steel)
- Drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems and water-distribution systems
- Sizing, installing, servicing, and testing water-supply piping
- Water heaters
- Natural gas piping
Program Expectations
Students entering the Plumbing (Roto-Rooter) Advanced Training program will be expected to participate in the following professional practices:
- Arrive on time and be ready to begin work immediately.
- Dress for the training area with uniform worn properly at all times.
- Work the entire time while on the job.
- Follow safety guidelines.
- Follow rules and instructions of the training area and Job Corps.
- Demonstrate respect for self, tools, and equipment.
- Take care of the work area—keeping work areas clean and safe.
- Exercise good customer relations skills.
- Follow grooming standards, no facial hair (mustaches allowed).
Program Entry Requirements
Before entering the Plumbing (Roto-Rooter) Advanced Training program, students must:
- Be at least 19 years old at completion of the Roto-Rooter program.
- Complete either Job Corps’ basic Facilities Maintenance or Plumbing career technical training program.
- Have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
- Meet academic (math and reading) requirements.
- Have a positive attendance and progress record.
- Have health clearance from the Job Corps center where they received basic training.
- Must have a clean driver’s license, background check, and credit report.
- Complete a successful phone or in-person interview.
Primary Credential
As a Job Corps student, you can earn credentials in your training area that demonstrate you have gained the knowledge and skills to help you succeed in your career. Credentials may lead to greater employment opportunities, higher wages, and promotions. Students who complete a center- based Construction training area can earn nationally recognized credentials from organizations such as The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).
Students training in union-affiliated programs, such as The United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC),International Masonry Institute (IMI), International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), and National Plastering Industry Joint Apprenticeship Trust Fund (NPIJATF), can earn a certificate of completion that offers apprenticeship opportunities and on-the-job experience.
